Source criticism and reliance in more parts of Sweden

At the time, every other young person between 17 and 23 stated that they did not feel part of society, according to a report by MUCF. The annual survey from the SOM Institute at the University of Gothenburg also showed that trust gaps were increasing. The largest exclusion was in sparsely populated and vulnerable areas. This exclusion is linked to the opportunity to influence the world around you and to be able to make informed decisions about one’s own life, future and our common society.

With the project “Empower youth with media and information literacy”, Google.org provided tools to schools with specific challenges in terms of trust in society and lack of media and information literacy. The project was run by the non-profit organization Voice4you using the Mobile Stories publishing tool. Students from various locations in Sweden had access to the tool until January 2025. Teachers and students received support in the implementation, support along the way and training.

Between 2019 and 2024, the project provided media and information literacy education to 12,000 young people in disadvantaged communities and rural areas.
